Say Goodbye to Paper Chromatography – Malic Acid Tester & Vinmetrica Labs

Malic Acid Test Kit

Vinmetrica is focused on quality, low cost, easy-to-use products for winemakers. That is why we are proud to be introducing our next product this summer. Malic acid testing is notoriously tedious, but we have a better answer. Get ready to free yourself from paper chromatography! Vinmetrica is currently moving into beta testing for the new Malic Acid tester, which will be an add-on for the Vinmetrica SC-300 (and we are working on compatibility with our other units as well). How much time will it save you? In 30 minutes, you will have a quantitative result that lets you know how your malolactic fermentation is going. How easy is it to use? Put your wine sample in our container, cap it and shake, set it aside for 30 minutes and then come back and take a measurement. Simple as that! No toxic volatile chemicals, no waiting to develop paper chromatography, and no mess!

  1. Good Morning,

I received my device early this morning. I am extremely excited about using the MLF Analyzer. Will you be posting a video on how to use the device? I have the instructions that were included. I would love to see a visual of the procedure to gain more confidence before I dive in. Thank you.

    1. Shawn,

Thank you for the enthusiasm! We are excited about its release as well.

We are currently finishing up editing a “How-To” video for the MLF Analyzer. We will be posting it to our website as soon as possible. If you need any further instruction in the mean time, please feel free to give us a call. We are here to help, 760-494-0597 and direct your call to our Tech Support Line.

  2. This new device will be worth the wait! I brought in 5 different samples today that I tested with AcuVin Malic testers ($4/test) and the results were spot on. I had samples that were from pre-MLF start to finish and results matched up. Rich showed me how it operates and it’s going to be easy. The best part, it’s just another adapter prob that will work with my 300, believe that it will work off of the SO2 setting. Great job, my order will be in as soon as its released.

    1. Mike, Thank you for the feedback. We are always looking for way to help our customers with their winemaking needs. Please keep an eye on our website as we will be updating it soon with information regarding the release of the Malic Tester and how it can be purchased.

  3. so the probe on the Sc-300 acts as a colormeter?

“Put your wine sample in our container, cap it and shake, set it aside for 30 minutes and then come back and take a measurement.”

    Sounds like enzymatic testing?

    1. Hi Tomer,
Yes, we call it a bio-pressure assay. The method of detection is pressure based rather than colorimetric, and allows for accurate detection of malic acid concentration. So incubating your sample with our biopressure reagent generates pressure that is proportional to the concentration of malic acid in the sample.

      Best regards,
      Richard W.

  4. how close are you to having the malic acid tester

    1. Todd, Thank you for your inquiry. We are currently and hopefully finishing up BETA testing here very soon. We are estimating that the device will be available in the middle of November. Please keep an eye on our website as we will announce its availability there.

  5. Is the malic acid tester ready? How about the res. sugar tester that you were working on,Ready?????
    Thanks Phil

  6. I’m curious when the MA tester will be available. I’ll be purchasing a meter/meters for PH and SO2. I really want an ISFET PH meter but if the SC-300 will have the ability to test MA and the SC-100 won’t it will certainly influence which meter/s I purchase.

    1. Hi Brett,

Yes the Malic Acid tester is in development right now. We are just about to put it in the hands of beta testers and are looking for a launch of the product soon. We don’t have an exact date for the launch but we are looking toward a date in late September! The SC-100 and SC-100A will be compatible with the MA tester. We have just tested it and it seems to be working well with any of our meters in the SO2 mode (which includes the SC-100, SC-100A and SC-300). We will let you know when it is ready to ship!

      Best regards,
      Richard W.

  7. Rich, This is a major step forward in testing. You have a lot of us really wanting more details. Sounds like it will not be compatible with the SC100 that a lot of us have. What options will be available for SC100 owners?

    1. Hi Doyle and Dave,

We are working on compatibility with the SC-100 and SC-100A. We will keep you updated as soon as we are ready to release it!

      Cheers,
      Richard W.

  8. Will the ML tester be compatible with the SC100A?

  9. If I purchase the SC-300 to do pH, TA and sulfite will I need to purchase a new meter to test for malic acid when you release your malic acid tester? Or will it be just another electrode that works on the SC-300 meter?

    1. Hi David,

The Malic Acid Tester will be compatible with the SC-300 unit, and will simply be an additional add-on for the SC-300.

      Best Regards,
      Richard W.
